He became the world's best-known exponent of North Indian classical music, in the second half of the 20th century, and influenced many other musicians throughout the world. Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999. Shankar was born to a Bengali Brahmin family in India, and spent his youth as a dancer touring India and Europe with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956. In 1956, Shankar began to tour Europe and the Americas playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Beatles guitarist George Harrison. His influence on Harrison helped popularize the use of Indian instruments in Western pop music in the latter half of the 1960s. Shankar engaged Western music by writing compositions for sitar and orchestra, and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1986 to 1992, he served as a nominated member of Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Parliament of India. He continued to perform until the end of his life. //// Label: EMI Classics ‎– 50999 6 21735 2 0 Format: 2 × CD, Compilation Country: UK & Europe Released: 09 Aug 2010 Genre: Folk, World, & Country Style: Indian Classical /// Tracklist: West Meets East 1-1 Prabhati Engineer [Balance] – Neville Boyling, Producer – Ronald Kinloch Anderson, Tabla – Alla Rakha, Violin – Yehudi Menuhin 4:12 1-2 Swara-Kakali Engineer [Balance] – Neville Boyling, Producer – Ronald Kinloch Anderson, Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Tambura [Tanpura] – Prodyot Sen, Violin – Yehudi Menuhin 8:50 1-3 Raga Piloo Engineer [Balance] – Frank Abbey, Producer – Robert Arnold (3), Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Tabla – Alla Rakha, Tambura [Tanpura] – Kamala Chakravarti, Violin – Yehudi Menuhin 14:44 1-4 Dhun Engineer [Balance] – Frank Abbey, Producer – Robert Arnold (3), Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Tabla – Alla Rakha, Tambura [Tanpura] – Kamala Chakravarti 6:29 1-5 Twilight Mood Engineer [Balance] – Carson Taylor, Producer – Patti Laursen, Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Tabla – Alla Rakha Tambura [Bass Tanpura] – Amiya Dasgupta, Tambura [Small Tanpura] – Nodu Mullick, Violin – Yehudi Menuhin 10:31 Full Circle: Carnegie Hall 2000 1-6 Raga Kaushi Kanhara Engineer [Assistant] – Frederick Jacobson, Marc Stedman, Michelle Numes, Engineer [Balance] – Tom Lazarus, Engineer [Remastering] – Scott Hull (2), Producer – Hans Wendl, Sitar – Anoushka Shankar, Ravi Shankar, Tabla – Bikram Ghosh, Tanmoy Bose, Tambura [Tanpura] – Ajay Sharma, Barry Phillips 19:02 1-7 Raga Kaushi Kanhara Engineer [Assistant] – Frederick Jacobson, Marc Stedman, Michelle Numes, Engineer [Balance] – Tom Lazarus, Engineer [Remastering] – Scott Hull (2), Producer – Hans Wendl, Sitar – Anoushka Shankar, Ravi Shankar, Tabla – Bikram Ghosh, Tanmoy Bose, Tambura [Tanpura] – Ajay Sharma, Barry Phillips 10:02 India's Master Musician 2-1 Kafi-Holi (Spring Festival Of Colours) Producer – Richard Bock, Remastered By [Digital Remastering] – Wayne Hileman, Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Tabla – Chatur Lal, Tambura [Tanpura] – Nodu Mullick 7:14 2-2 Mishra Piloo Producer – Richard Bock, Remastered By [Digital Remastering] – Wayne Hileman, Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Tabla – Chatur Lal, Tambura [Tanpura] – Nodu Mullick 10:37 Portrait Of Genius 2-3 Tala Rasa Ranga Flute – Paul Horn, Producer, Engineer [Balance] – Richard Bock, Remastered By [Digital Remastering] – Wayne Hileman, Santoor – Sam Chianis, Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Sitar, Tambura [Tanpura] – Dr Penelope Estabrook, Tabla – Alla Rakha, Tabla [Tabla-Tarang], Dholak – Harihar Rao, Tabla, Percussion [Kartal] – Phil Harland 2:58 2-4 Tabla - Dhwani Flute – Paul Horn, Producer, Engineer [Balance] – Richard Bock, Remastered By [Digital Remastering] – Wayne Hileman, Santoor – Sam Chianis, Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Sitar, Tabla, Tambura [Tanpura] – Dr Penelope Estabrook, Tabla – Alla Rakha, Tabla [Tabla-Tarang], Dholak – Harihar Rao, Tabla, Percussion [Kartal] – Phil Harland 4:52 2-5 Song From The Hills Flute – Paul Horn, Producer, Engineer [Balance] – Richard Bock, Remastered By [Digital Remastering] – Wayne Hileman, Santoor – Sam Chianis, Sitar – Ravi Shankar, Sitar, Tambura [Tanpura] – Dr Penelope Estabrook, Tabla – Alla Rakha, Tabla [Tabla-Tarang], Dholak – Harihar Rao, Tabla, Percussion [Kartal] – Phil Harland 3:01 2-6 Tala - Tabla
ASIN: B0080G8QAM
VSKU: DBV.B0080G8QAM.A
Condition: Acceptable
Author/Artist:Shankar, Ravi
Binding: Audio cd
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: This copy has clearly been enjoyed—expect noticeable shelf wear and some minor creases to the cover.
