{"product_id":"to-die-like-a-man","title":"To Die Like A Man","description":"Review\n\nA wry, strangely enchanted tragicomedy --Dennis Lim, Cinema Scope\n\nOne of the most daring new talents to emerge in the past decade --Melissa Anderson, Village Voice\n\nProduct Description\n\nTonia is a larger-than-life drag icon of Lisbon's night life in the late 1980s. At the peak of her career, she meets and falls in love with Rosario, a young soldier who's gone AWOL. Under pressure from Rosario, Tonia begins a series of operations to become a woman but the final step proves much harder than she could have guessed. Torn between her love for Rosario and her deeply-rooted religious convictions, Tonia looks for distraction in a trip to the countryside with Rosario. Lost along the way, the couple find themselves in an enchanted forest where everything they think they know about life and love is proven wrong. Part melodrama, part phantasmagorical fairy tale, to Die Like a Man is visual extravaganza.\n\nAbout the Actor\n\nFernando Santos, started getting attention in film and TV work in 2000 when he was on a TV show called Family Doctor that aired in Portugal and other parts of the world. He has since participated in many queer films such as The Heart s Root (2001), and A Outra Margem (2007). Santos was also nominated for the equivalent of the Golden Globes in Portugal in 2010 in the Best Actor category for his performance in To Die Like A Man.\n\nAbout the Director\n\nLisbon native, Joao Pedro Rodrigues was born in 1966. He began studying biology at Lisbon University to become an ornithologist, but soon gave that up for cinema studies and graduated from Lisbon Film School. In this film a man is awakened by his girlfriend s birthday wishes on the answering machine before it s revealed that he s sharing a bed with another man. The short s sexually confused theme would become one that Rodrigues would continue to explore in his features.\n\nHis short Happy Birthday! was awarded a Special Jury Mention in the 54th Venice International Film Festival. His feature debut, O Fantasma (2000), won another Grand Prix at Entrevues and Best Feature at the New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.
