About this item

WHERE THE SABIÁ BIRD SINGS is an atmospheric and moving family saga, set primarily in Rio de Janeiro and Annapolis, Maryland from the 1960s through the ‘80s. It is written in memoir style by the Brazilian-born, French/American protagonist, Jean-Pierre Sinclair, when, at age 35, he finds himself on the threshold of restarting his life. His narrative voice is imbued with the warmth, humor, and optimism for which Cariocas (natives of Rio) are known. And in certain passages of dialogue, the reader might detect the languid, off-beat rhythm of Rio’s bossa nova music. The pivotal and recurring themes of this family saga include longing, love, tragedy, resilience, loyalty, and finding one’s place in the muddled landscape of identity. EDITORIAL REVIEWS "Filled with fascinating characters, "Where the Sabia Bird Sings" is a moving exploration of many types of loss— loss of loved ones, loss of physical capabilities, loss of identity. Much of the story is set in Brazil, and Hardy's familiarity with the settings as well as the language and culture of the country give the narrative an unquestionable authenticity. The diverse background of the protagonist (American father, French mother, brought up in Brazil) gives the author rich material to mine, and he takes full advantage of the possibilities. The ending ties in nicely with the opening, making for a satisfying conclusion to a story that is entertaining, thought-provoking, and touching." -- M. A.
