Removed from the politics of war and terrorism (yet still, like all films, inherently political in expressing its point of view), Oliver Stone's potent drama focuses on the nightmarish ordeal, and subsequent rescue, of Port Authority policemen John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña), who were buried deeply within the rubble of the WTC after the twin towers collapsed. Granted, it's only the film's historical context that distinguishes it from any other dramatic rescue story, but in focusing on the goodness of humanity in response to the evil of terrorists who remain unnamed and off-screen, Stone and first-time screenwriter Andrea Berloff create an emotional context as powerful as anything Stone has directed since Platoon. Even as he resorts to some questionable tactics typically lacking in subtlety, Stone refrains from much of the blunt-force filmmaking that has made him a critical punching bag, rising to this challenging occasion with a heartfelt and deeply American portrait of unity – personal, familial, and national. Flaws and all, World Trade Center serves an honorable purpose, reminding us all that for those fleeting days in September 2001, America showed its best face to a sympathetic world. --Jeff Shannon

Set Contains:

Like the movie itself, the bonus features on the two-disc commemorative edition of World Trade Center pay admirable tribute to the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001. Disc 1 includes two full-length commentaries: Director Oliver Stone speaks quietly, honestly, and eloquently about the challenges of making World Trade Center as authentic as possible, offering insights about various aspects of the production and sharing anecdotes about how he and his crew strove to recreate the events of 9/11 in exacting detail. Stone also addresses the issues that surrounded the film, such as the appropriateness of its timing, cooperation with the families of 9/11 victims and survivors, and his effort to avoid politicizing the terrorists attacks in light of the ensuing war in Iraq (which Stone opposes). Former New York Port Authority policeman and WTC survivor Will Jimeno (played in the film by Michael Peña) provides most of the second commentary track, speaking at length (and with great generosity of spirit) about his experience of being trapped in the rubble of WTC-1, noting that Stone's film is "95% accurate" and pointing out where certain details were compressed or slightly altered for dramatic effect. He's joined (during the rescue sequences) by the men who saved him: Scott Strauss, John Busching, and Paddy McGee. Together they provide a riveting account of exactly what happened, and Jimeno ends by offering a heartfelt explanation of why fellow survivor John McLoughlin opted not to participate in the commentary (primarily due to his ongoing recovery and the trauma of reliving the nightmare of his ordeal). Disc 1 also includes 17 minutes of deleted or extended scenes with optional commentary by Oliver Stone, mostly explaining why these scenes didn't make the final cut.
By far, the highlight of disc 2 is "Common Sacrifice," a two-part, 55-minute documentary focusing on the WTC survivors, their families and friends, and the doctors and therapists who aided Will Jimeno and especially John McLoughlin during their lengthy and (in Mc
ASIN: B000JLTRJ0
VSKU: 4EKGU9006I8T_ns
Condition: Good
Binding: DVD
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: Individually inspected: Guaranteed to play perfectly or your money back.
