Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines (Unrated)

Amazon.com The Wrong Turn horror franchise again lurches forward with another grisly woodland face-off between unsuspecting young people and a trio of deformed cannibalistic killers. As with its predecessor, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, the fifth picture serves as a prequel to the events in the franchise's 2003 origin, with writer-director Declan O'Brien (Roger Corman's Sharktopus) returning to referee the mayhem. And, like the previous sequels, there are elements that might keep viewers and franchise fans engaged, most notably the presence of horror vet Doug Bradley--the once and future Pinhead from the Hellraiser series--as an incarcerated killer with a connection to the murderous brothers (series fans will recall that Wayne Robson played an older version of the character in the first two entries). Beyond that, however, it's bloody business as usual, as a quintet of concertgoers en route to a West Virginia music festival are brutally and systematically dispatched and consumed. The gory set pieces, which at times aspire to an E.C. Comics level of gleeful, diabolically elaborate deaths, exist as a sort of separate entity from the rest of the picture, which is woefully dull and cheaply executed. The murders, however, are energetically devised and executed, which should serve as indication of where the filmmakers' interests lie, with an entire supplemental feature (the seven-minute "Hillbilly Kills") devoted to detailing their elaborate planning. Those seeking splatter and nothing more should be fairly satisfied with the effects on display in Wrong Turn 5; all others needn't bother.
