yatra
Yatra
Product Description

David Parsons has long been fascinated by India and Tibet, two ancient worlds characterized by potent mythologies, mystical sacred sites, and sublime musical traditions. Over the years, this respected electronic composer has made numerous yatras (journeys, in Sanskrit) to India, experiencing the sites and sounds of this exotic land. Yatra is Parsons' first comprehensive attempt to log the essence of his Far Eastern adventures.
Unlike his highly successful 1989 release Himalaya (17059-2), an artfully austere sonic ascent of the legendary mountain range, Yatra opens with a more earthy approach. The recording gently leads you through the Indian countryside, with its busy open air markets and joyful folk melodies, gradually moving to the ethereal realm of Tibet, a landscape imbued with secret ceremonies and hidden knowledge. Tapes recorded during a 1987 trip to the East merge with the Macintosh-manipulated samples of Indian instruments Parsons has collected over the years, to create a vivid sonic representation of the land and its people.

About the Artist

New Zealand synthesist, David Parsons, first became interested in the music of India when he heard a performance by Ravi Shankar. At that time, the young jazz-rock drummer bought a sitar and explored the instrument on his own for several years before studying with Krishna Chakravarty. He subsequently produced her recordings Ananda (17046-2), Dancing to the Flute (13135-2) and Circular Dance (13133-2).
Parsons' recordings make the Eastern sensibility comprehensible to the Western listener and formulate a unique and captivating new expression. To Parsons' credit as a musician, composer and performer, he has evolved into a rare and highly acclaimed producer of cultural music traditions. His work is often featured in film, television and radio scores, and continues to be widely praised by reviewers.
His recordings on Fortuna Records/Celestial Harmonies are Tibetan Plateau / Sounds of the Mothership (17013-2), Himalaya (17059-2), Dorje Ling (17076-2), Yatra (18072-2), Ngaio Gamelan (13171-2), Shaman (13181-2), In Retrospect: 1980-2003 (14204-2), Maitreya: The Future Buddha (13214-2), Buddha: Transcending Space & Time (14215-2) and Inner Places (13245-2).
He has also produced for Celestial Harmonies The Music of Cambodia (3 CD Boxed Set) (19902-2), The Music of Vietnam (3 CD Boxed Set) (19903-2), The Music of Bali (3 CD Boxed Set) (19905-2), The Music of Islam (17 CD Boxed Set) (19907-2), The Music of Armenia (7 CD Boxed Set) (19909-2) and Sacred Ceremonies: Ritual Music of Tibetan Buddhism (3 CD Boxed Set) (19913-2).
ASIN: B0000007VG
VSKU: DBV.B0000007VG.G
Condition: Good
Author/Artist:PARSON,DAVID
Binding: Audio cd
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: Individually inspected: Guaranteed to play perfectly or your money back.
